Fledgling life science startups in North San Jose can now opt for new laboratory digs.
BioCube San Jose has opened a second incubator for life science companies at 2680 Zanker Road, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
The 35,000-square-foot facility is located at BioSquare Silicon Valley life sciences park. The company opened its first incubator by leasing 65,000 square feet at 5941 Optical Court in South San Jose.
“We are planning a grow-in-place ecosystem for startups,” Tony Gonzalez, CEO for BioCube, told the Mercury News. “Our incubator can take a very small laboratory and help it grow into a much larger client as time passes.”

One startup has moved into the Zanker Road incubator, with two others poised to follow.
BioCube and BioSquare Silicon Valley can offer a succession of lab spaces to life science companies throughout their growth. The idea is that new companies can lease bench space at BioCube, which takes up half of one of BioSquare’s seven buildings. As they develop, they can expand into the adjacent BioSquare campus, creating a real estate spectrum of life science companies.
The entire BioSquare Silicon Valley complex, developed by Blue Rise Ventures and PCCP, totals 465,000 square feet, according to a brochure. It’s marketed by real estate firm JLL. The dedicated life sciences park was once known as Valley Tech Centre.
“Typically, when a company reaches a certain size, they just move out of their building and relocate, sometimes to another city,” Gonzalez said. “Now they can just stay and grow in place. They can take the additional square footage that’s available in BioSquare.”
The two BioCube incubators on the north and south side of the city can accommodate startup companies developing pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, biomedical technologies, genomics, cleantech and food tech.
The South San Jose incubator can accommodate 35 companies, and has incubated more than 100 firms since it opened in 2004.
